Songwriting

Updated: May 8

I’m often asked about how I write songs. More often than not, I get a chord sequence/groove to which I sing mumbo jumbo. Often, a line of some sense comes along which then forms the catalyst for the words.

It’s rare I put music to words, though I often have ideas to pursue around the music once I get the initial word(s) spark. However, I’m usually mystified about the meaning of the completed song until I begin to reflect on it and discover its nature for me. It is rare I find simple explanations but rather layers of meaning and open ended possibilities. I’m keen on such enigmatic statements but I know it can be a trial for those looking for simple ‘pop’ tunes. However, I would love to write something as catchy as ‘Sugar Sugar’ (The Archies)!
